Automation System Setup

Here are some pictures of all the components I brought home to install inside the Greenhouse. The greenhouse seemed larger in my memory than in real-life but I did manage to fit everything in there but due to a perfectly timed rainstorm once I started I rushed and created a horrible mess of wires inside the greenhouse.

Here you can see the kitty litter fans and the large box fan, which are both controlled by the Arduino. This picture was taken right before I put everything into the greenhouse.

This is the result of the rainstorm when I didn't have time to get everything in nicely without components getting wet. I wouldn't consider myself a clean freak by any means, but not having time to clean this up about gave me nightmares.

One of the fans I mounted into the cat-litter top like this to prevent condensation from dripping onto the fan.

Another fan mounted inside a cat-litter container with the cheap webcamera on top. I used Dielectric Grease on pretty much any connection that needed protection and that power strip which then was electrical taped around that rod.

Of course the computer didn't auto-connect to the Wireless Router on the first setup so I had to bring a monitor out to correctly connect the computer. I don't know if I should have blamed the Cisco router again, or the computer. In the background you can see the fan spinning though which meant that the humidity was greater than 70-75% (not surprising since it was raining).

Unfortunately the computer started to get uncomfortably hot towards the middle of March. I thought abut adding vents for cooling, or a radiator to exchange heat from the computer into the fish-tank but I found a USB wireless adapter that was supported by Linux drivers so I removed the computer with the intention of replacing it with a Raspberry-Pi. The Pi has enough processing for my needs while using very little power and helps to keep everything smaller and more simple.

The Raspberry-Pi still needs some accessories, but I was able to get away with just an external USB powered hub and a wireless USB adapter.
